While it is true that no permanent cure for bronchitis has been formulated yet, there are a few steps you can take to alleviate your suffering, if nothing else.
1. The first thing you should do is to stop smoking. Smoking damages the lungs and it is no wonder that non-smokers have less chance of having bronchitis than smokers. Nicotine replacement therapy can help you to quit smoking. Note that if others in your household are also smoking, they need to stop too, as second hand smoking can also aggravate bronchitis.
Clean your office environment. Many times dust from your office surroundings may enter your lungs and cause coughing. If you continue to work in a clean environment and promise never to smoke, you may one day get cured of bronchitis.
2. Take the medications as prescribed by your doctor. More often than not, medicines for bronchitis may include one or more of the following:
a) Bronchodilators: Bronchodilators help open up your airways, and hence, alleviates coughing by a great extent
b) Corticosteroids: Corticosteroids will help you reduce inflammation, swelling and phlegm production. For most people, corticosteroids taken orally or by inhalation helps a lot.
c) Expectorants: Doctors often prescribe expectorants to alleviate coughing that results from chronic bronchitis. They also help to liquidify the phlegm so as to make it easier for the phlegm to get out of the lungs
d) Antibiotics: Antibiotics are not used to treat the disease itself. They are more often than not prescribed to kill the bacteria that may inhabit in a person’s lungs.
3. Apart from medicines, there are also some home remedies you can use to cure bronchitis. For example, you should bath in a hot shower, inhale the steam of hot water, and install a humidifier in your bedroom. All these will help to alleviate your coughing.
4. Drink lots of liquids. You should drink at least eight glasses of water daily. Drinking hot beverages such as tea also helps. You should avoid drinking cold drinks as it only irritates your lungs and will worsen your coughing.
