4 Easy Ways to Maintain Your Lawn

If you have a lawn you know damn well how important it is to keep it healthy and thick. A healthy garden, just like a healthy body, helps to keep out the weeds, diseases and insects. Contrary to popular beliefs, it does not take a lot of time or cost an astronomical amount of money to keep your lawn lush and green. All you need is a solid lawn maintenance program which is what I am going to help you with in this article!

Aerate and Fertilize: The first and foremost thing to do in order to maintain the health and growth of your lawn is to aerate it: that is, making small holes in the soil to allow the free circulation of air, water and fertilizer. Once you are done with the aeration process, next add the necessary fertilizer. This process should be followed whether you live in a warm-climate or cold-climate country; especially for countries with warm climate it is recommended that you throw in a nice mix of nitrogen as well along with your regular fertilizer. This entire process of aeration and fertilization should be done at the start of the season.

Water your lawn: Water is of course very much essential both for the health of the soil as well as the plants. As a general rule, you should apply at least one inch of water to your lawn on a regular basis. This is of course meant only for the non-rainy season; the amount of water you apply during the rainy season need to be adjusted according to the rainfall. Another thing to keep in mind is that you should do the watering early in the morning so that the water stays in for sometime in the lawn; if you do it during the noon time the water would evaporate before the soil even gets a chance to absorb it!

An indication that you are not watering your lawn well enough is that the color of grass turning from green to brown. Grasses which are meant for cool season usually do turn brown during the hot days of summer; however, they get their original green color back as soon as the cool season starts to settle.

Use the lawn mower to maintain your lawn: In order to maintain the health of your garden, here is another thing you should do at the very start of the season: cut the stems of your lawn’s grasses completely, for which your mower’s blade needs to be sharp. If you think that the blade is not sharp enough you should sharpen it RIGHT NOW! Failure to cut the stems of the grass completely and simply ripping or shredding them can result in your soil getting infected with various kinds of harmful diseases.

Weed control: Weed control solutions need to be applied a bit differently. For instance, just because you did the aeration, mowing and fertilization of your lawn at the start of the season doesn’t mean that you should apply the weed control solutions at the same time! Weeds start to appear around the time when the current season is over and a new season is beginning, so that is the perfect time to kill them with your poison!

Maintaining your lawn should not be hard as long as you follow the four tips above. Enjoy!
