Top 3 Reasons Why You Should Exercise For Fitness

What is fitness? If you ask the question to a casual bystander, he would say that it is all about getting the six packs, having great abs, biceps, well toned arms, etc. However, a doctor would tell you that fitness is much more than that, that fitness is not just about physical fitness but also mental fitness. In this article I will tell you how to be fit both in body and mind!

You cannot relegate fitness into just another optional hobby; you need routine, DAILY work to get yourself fit. Just because one has great biceps and six packs doesn’t mean he is fit. A fit person not only has power and strength, but is also extremely agile and flexible. One misconception that is common among so many people (mostly among those who are looking for excuses for not going to the gym) is that only those who are physically active in sports (that is, the athletes) can have a fit body; nothing could be further from the truth!

So, how would you know if a person is fit or not? Like I said earlier, a fit person is someone who has to be extremely flexible, agile, powerful, strong, etc.; power and strength don’t just mean what you think, but much more than that: strength means that the person should have a high endurance level to cardiovascular workouts, strength training workouts, muscle coordination, etc. Being fit means being an all-rounder in the department of fitness; if any of these features is lacking in a person than he cannot be called fit no matter what.

Now I am sure you want to ask the biggest question of all: Why should I become fit? What is in it for me?

Well, fitness definitely comes with a number of benefits. Consider:

a) Freedom from diseases: Several studies have pointed out that a sedentary lifestyle is behind a number of diseases affecting people today, such as depression, osteoporosis, type2 diabetes, obesity, colon cancer, stroke, breast cancer, heart diseases, etc., many of which cut short a person’s lifespan. Being fit is therefore important if you want to live a healthy and long life!

b) Freedom from lethargy: Have you ever felt that you just don’t have any energy left to do even your normal, routine activities? A person who is not physically fit greatly lacks in energy, stamina and strength, so much so that he cannot perform even the most basic duties expected of him by his family. For instances, simple things such as carrying a baby, carrying groceries, climbing stairs, etc., which would come across as normal activities to a fit person feels like highly demanding jobs to an unfit person. A big reason why some people are fit and others are not is because the former performs exercises and workouts regularly and the latter don’t! This is because exercises increase the power of your immune system.

Exercises do not just enhance your physical strength; they also help to strengthen your bones. Keep in mind that an average man or woman starts losing their bone mass bit by bit starting from the age of thirty-five, and if you don’t exercise, you will soon be suffering from osteoporosis!

c) Your Body Looks Great: Of course, most of us workout not for health reasons but rather to look great and keep fit so as to impress members of the opposite sex, flaunt our bodies to our buddies, etc. When you have a fit body, you will lose whatever weight you might have gained much quicker compared to an unfit person. An unfit person will go on a crash diet, lose more muscles than fat, and generally make himself weak: both in mind and body, so that he becomes unable to carry out even his day-to-day tasks. On the other hand, a fit person would only have to increase the level of his workouts a little bit to lose weight; after all, muscles help you burn fat anyway!
